Everyone knows the different areas of ministry that goes on around churches, right? Well, maybe not the new people, but everyone else knows, right? I have found that far too many people, including staff people, are not really sure what all is going on.
Experience has taught me…
I remember to well the staff meetings, where everyone was crying that they did not have enough volunteers to help them with ministry. They had tried ministry education and leadership training but they still had trouble recruiting volunteers. We implemented PLACE with its assessment tools and self discovery and shortly had an army of people who had discovered they could do something for the Kingdom. They were looking to the staff to tell them what to do. These same people who had cried for months had no idea what to tell them. We almost train wrecked our volunteer training by the lack of ministry education and brief direct job descriptions. We also began to discover many areas of ministry that had been completely overlooked before. For the most part people view ministry as being able to teach or preach, and play or sing. There is so much more to ministry than just these areas.
Questions to ask…
PLACE offers a great mix of assessment tools with very practical teaching to help guide participants to a wide variety of ministry. But, before you begin the process ask yourself what you are going to do with the people who discover they can do something for the Lord. Do you have your ministry positions identified? Can you tell them how much time it will take them and who they will answer too? These descriptions do not have to be lengthy but you do need to give adequate information so people can chose to make an investment of their time and talents. Be prepared. Be ready. Never keep your volunteers waiting. Put descriptions in their hands that will give them a variety of options and you will increase your volunteer participation.
